Given the nature of the new establishment and their new fit out, I ultimately think it could damage their brand and hurt their existing customer base.

For sometime now the T-bar has been a brand associated with fine teas, a relaxing atmosphere and friendly service. Their quality of product and staff conduct has been second to none, and I have spent many lazy lunches sitting in secluded undisturbed space working on some much needed paper work. Unfortunately as of today, they have decided to relocate to a busy food court in a massive new shopping complex, and of course, minus the more private dining spaces.

Given the T-Bar’s existing brand up until this point, it would seem like a sharp deviation away from what built them into the cafe they are today. On first glance it would appear to be an attempt to cash in on a larger captive customer base, but it will surely not give rise to the same type of loyal customers they once enjoyed. Ultimately this could have a huge impact on the cafe’s overall brand - eroding away a concept based on quality and merely reducing it to a cheap “grab and run” food court store.

Of course the immediate losers in this equation are the existing customer base that helped build the store into what it is today. Many will have to find alternatives if they wish to enjoy a relaxing lunch with family, friends or work colleagues. That is, of course, if they don’t wish to join the hundreds of noisy diners in the newly appointed aircraft hanger style food court.

By hanging this outside blocking the harsh sunlight coming through a window (it must cover it in its entirety) and using a flash to fire through it into the interior of the building, it is possible to emulate natural light without risking blowing out the highlights. This is worth considering if you are doing environmental portraits indoors and want more control over the light while having a natural feel to the image.

This handy hint was recently suggested by photographer Joe McNally in one of this informative videos on AdoramaTV and thought I it was worth sharing.

Professional photo image deconstructions by Joe McNally.

It’s not often I come across a series of youtube videos worth sharing, but I recently found a series of photo deconstructions by Joe McNally. This leading photographer delves into setting up and lighting shots for professional briefs, as well as presenting informative and easy to follow diagrams illustrating his points. If you have ever wondered how to pull off a professional location based photography shoot, these videos should be of interest.
